Arriving at Auckland: first thoughts

Auckland is a great city – if you do not think about the fact, that it could be covered in clouds of ashes and streams of lava. Who knows if the volcanos do not reawaken soon… Besides, they are a big advantage of the city: they provide wonderful lookouts. One has to get to the top first though. There are a couple of streets here, for which the word “steep” would be an understatement.
Auckland ist eine großartige Stadt – wenn man nicht daran denkt, dass sie theoretisch jeden Moment von von Aschewolken und Lavaströmen eingedeckt werden könnte. Wer weiß schon, ob die Vulkane nicht bald wieder erwachen… Davon abgesehen, sind sie allerdings ein großer Vorzug der Stadt: sie bieten wunderschöne Aussichtspunkte. Man muss allerdings auch erstmal nach oben kommen. Es gibt einige Straßen hier, bei denen das Wort “steil” untertrieben wäre.

Nature / Natur
Although Auckland is a big city with 1.3 million inhabitants, one can already marvel at New Zealand’s diverse vegetation. A kind of palm trees, olive trees and other beauties of which names we do not have the faintest idea.
Obwohl Auckland eine große Stadt mit 1.3 Millionen Einwohnern ist, kann man schon hier die vielfältige Vegetation Neuseelands bewundern. Palmen, Olivenbäume und andere Schönheiten von denen wir keinen blassen Schimmer haben, wie sie heißen.

Shopoing and Food / Einkauf und Essen
As mentioned: it is expensive. Fast food is O.K. Subway is everywhere. Truly everywhere… Around the corner from the Hostel was ” The Burgerie ” with a special offer of Burger + Chips for 5$. It did not seem to be the cleanest place, but at least they had a certificate for A-quality hygiene hanging on their wall. But the best experience there was the delivery of some cardboard boxes. Written on it in big letters was “handle with care”, but when they arrived (carried in a shopping trolley), the already looked damaged enough and on top of that, they were just THROWN in some corner of the room behind. I wonder what the contents of these boxes were…
At least the salt was cheap at the Asian supermarket. 69c for a small plastic bag.
Supermarkets are rare, but instead, there are heaps of small Convienience Stores. The rebates at Coutdown ( supermarket chain ) are really strange: you pay more for two pieces of a product than for four of the same kind on some occasions.
Alcohol is sold in liquor stores (of which there are plenty), but virtually every public place is a “liquor ban area”, so you would have to drink it at home, although that wouldn’t have been an alternative for us, as the hostel did not allow alcohol consumption inside…
Wie schon erwähnt: es ist teuer. Fast food ist ok. Es gibt es überall Subway. Wirklich überall… Beim Hostel um die Ecke gab’s “The Burgerie” mit einem Sonderangebot von Burger+Pommes für 5$. Es schieb nicht der sauberste Laden zu sein, dennoch hatten sie ein Klasse A Hygiene-Zertifikat an der Wand hängen. Aber das beste Erlebnis dort, war die Lieferung einiger Pappkartons. In großen Buchstaben stand auf ihnen “mit Vorsicht behandeln”, doch als sie (in einem Einkaufswagen) ankamen, sahen sie schon beschädigt genug aus und darüber hinaus wurden sie auch noch schwungvoll in die nächste Ecke GEWORFEN. Ich frage mich, was wohl in diesen Boxen war…
Wenigstens das Salz war günstig im Asia-Shop. 69c für ein Plastikbeutelchen.
Supermärkte sind seltener, dafür gibt es einen Haufen kleiner “Convienience Stores”. Die Rabatte bei Countdown (Supermarkt-Kette) sind sehr seltsam: teilweise bezahlt man für vier Stück eines Produktes sogar weniger als für zwei.
Alkohol wir in Liquor Stores verkauft (von denen es viele gibt), aber praktisch jeder öffentliche Platz gehört zu einer Alkohol-Verbotszone, man muss also Zuhause trinken, was uns allerdings nicht möglich gewesen wäre, da unser Hostel den Alkoholkonsum nicht gestattete.

Germans / Deutsche
The first People we’ve heard talking at the hostel (excluding the receptionist) were speaking German. That experience went on: too many Germans here. Till even believed to know one of the German girls from somewhere. Proved to be wrong though.
Die ersten Leute die wir im Hostel sprechen gehört haben (von der Rezeption abgesehen), redeten deutsch. Diese Erfahrung setzte sich fort: zu viele Deutsche hier. Till meinte sogar, eine der Deutschen irgendwoher zu kennen. Stellte sich allerdings als Irrtum heraus.

Television and Advertisments / Fernsehen und Werbung
We haven’t seen that much yet, but New Zealand got their own Joko & Klaas: Jono & Ben (“Bin” in proper New Zealand pronunciation). The ad posters show a lot of rhyming phrases and puns or absurdities.
Wir haben noch nicht viel gesehen, aber Neuseeland hat auch eine Art Joko & Klaas: Jono & Ben. Plakatwerbung ist voller Reime und Wortspiele oder Absurditäten.

Internet
Our first try to get Wifi was at Starbuck’s and not successful. Our fist hostel wanted to get paid for it. Our second one even got computers for free use, but the speed was mostly really slow. The library was closed because of Eastern, but we could still use the free WiFi in front of it.
Unser erster Versuch WLAN zu bekommen, war bei Starbucks und nicht erfolgreich. Unser erstes Hostel wollte dafür bezahlt werden. Unser Zweites hatte sogar kostenlos nutzbare Computer, aber die Geschwindigkeit war meist ziemlich langsam. Die Bibliothek war wegen Ostern geschlossen, aber wir konnten davor trotzdem das WLAN nutzen.

Zoo
We saw kiwis in the dark, giant Galápagos tortoises, a crocodile that you shouldn’t throw stuff on and a cockatoo saying “hello captain”…
Wir haben Kiwis im Dunkeln, riesige Galapagos-Schildkröten, ein Krokodil, das man nicht mit Zeug bewerfen soll und einen Kakadu, der “hello captain” sagt, gesehen…

Museum
I went to the museum alone, as Till is not a big fan of museums and it’s quite expensive. They show a diversity of different things and topics, e.g. animals, volcanoes, pottery, Maori culture, a reconstruction of 60s Auckland, furniture and war history.
Ich bin alleine ins Museum gegangen, da Till kein großer Fan von Museen ist und es teuer war. Sie stellen verschiedenste Dinge zu verschiedensten Themen aus, z.B. Tiere, Vulkane, Töpferei, Maori-Kultur, eine Art Rekonstruktion des 60er Auckland, Möbel und Kriegsgeschichte.
