North Island Part Two: Busy Sightseeing.

We have been discovering the South Island with a rental car for the last two weeks. But before we talk about that: here’s what we saw in the north – mainly in pictures (because they say more than 1000 words, as it’s said).
Wir haben in den letzten zwei Wochen die Südinsel mit einem Mietwagen erkundet. Aber bevor wir darüber sprechen gibt es hier erst mal eine Zusammenfassung dessen, was wir im Norden noch gesehen haben – hauptsächlich in Bildern (da sie ja bekanntlich mehr sagen als tausend Worte).

Rotorua
Rotorua is famous and infamous for the same thing: it’s hot pools. The upside: It’s interesting. The downside: it smells bad. All over the town.
Rotorua ist bekannt und berüchtigt für das gleiche: seine heißen Quellen. Der Vorteil: es ist interessant. Der Nachteil: es riecht schlecht. Überall in der Stadt.

There are free public footbaths. / Es gibt kostenlose öffentliche Fußbäder.

This Maori village uses geothermal heat in their backyards for cooking and bathing. I’ve also seen a song/dance performance and we learned pronouncing Maori names (kind of). / Dieses Maori-Dorf nutzt geothermale Hitze in ihrem Hinterhof fürs Kochen und Baden. Ich habe noch eine Gesangs- & Tanzvorstellung gesehen und wir haben gelernt wie man Maori-Namen ausspricht (relativ).

Waitomo Caves
The caves were partly interesting, partly impressive and partly very beautiful. For the Glowworm Cave you have to search your own pictures, as we weren’t allowed to take any… Nice guides, nice views, but way too short. / Die Höhlen waren zum Teil interessant, zum Teil beeindruckend und zum Teil sehr schön. Für die Glowworm-Höhle müsst ihr euch eigene Bilder suchen, da wir keine machen durften… Nette Führer, nette Anblicke, aber viel zu kurz.

Cave Wetas

Matamata
Hobbiton was nice but also too short and the beer wasn’t good. / Hobbiton war nett aber auch viel zu kurz und das Bier war nicht gut.

Taupo
Small town with a big lake. Huge. And formed by volcanic eruptions: how cool is that?
Kleine Stadt mit großem See. Riesig. Und von Vulkanausbrüchen geformt: Wie cool ist das denn?
